During the time Nau was born, a corrupt political figure had secretly demanded that all gudrian eggs be given to a random parent instead of their biological parents. this was eventually discovered and the politician was arrested, he claimed it was to put an end to birthrights by giving all children an equal chance at every possible life. Nau and Siti were part of the eggs that were switched, also during that time, they had strict "One child per family" rules due to overpopulation. so no pair of parents received more than one egg. but Gudrian twins (which are very rare) hatch from the same egg, this made Siti the only true relative Nau ever had.
aside from that, they had a fairly nice childhood with their adoptive parents who treated them like their own children. Nau was interested in xenoarchaeology (Alien archaeology) specifically the study of the long dead human civilization, he was fascinated with their nature manipulating technology. he went on to study the remains of humanity while Siti pursued a career in business. Nau became a well known xenoarchaeologist and many companies that profited from reverse engineering ancient technology hired him to travel to ancient human colonies and tell them what they found.
Meanwhile, after the death of their father due to illness (their mother died a few years later in an unrelated incident.) Siti managed to become the assistant to Posk Ovene, the head of the largest ancient technology corporation in the galaxy. she accomplished this through years of hard work, offering Nau's services, and a street fight with an employee from a rival company.
that corporation eventually uncovered the location of Earth, the "Holy Grail" of xenoarcheology. Nau was asked to travel with them on this expedition to the ancient planet. Nau traveled to the planet expecting to find ruins of a great civilization, but he instead found something more.

Fun fact: i based Nau's design (along with his whole species) off of something i made with lego when i was 13, it sits intact on my shelf to this day.
